Gardening with my kids

It’s spring! The first thing that comes in my mind when spring comes is…allergies! Ha-ha…however, this spring I am more positive. I thought about starting a new habit, which is gardening! I’m not an expert in gardening, but I like to learn new things. Also, I like to share what I learned with my kids and my friends too.

So, I thought about gardening with my kids. It’s fun, and they will enjoy it for sure. Cultivating good habits is the best thing in kids’ lives. And it’s a good way for them to learn different types of plants, flowers, vegetables and fruits, etc…

In fact, be ready for millions of questions from your preschooler. Get your Siri ready! 😂

Go shopping together for your project: We went shopping for gardening tools together; I was not able to find kids gardening tools, in fact, they’re available online, so we bought the necessary items available at the store : planting pots, sunflower seeds, a small size ready plant, soil, watering can, and gloves.

Start the project: So, we started our project small, by planting some flowers and plants my son and kids in general like. Fast growing plants are the good start project for kids, like sunflowers.

Play and discover: I gave Ibrahim the soil and let him play with it. I didn’t want him to wear gloves, so he can feel dirt and discover what he can do with it. You can let your babies touch dirt, which I let Iness play with it,but pay attention they don’t eat it. Iness ate a little bit. Not surprising! 🙄

Talk about it and learn: Then, I asked Ibrahim to put most in the pot about 1/2 inch deep, and sow seeds 4 to 5 inches apart. Preschoolers sometimes have trouble understanding measurements and time. And this is a good opportunity to talk with kids about time, different seasons of the year, and different plants and how they sprout.

Let them transplant: We Transplanted the little plant we bought into a larger pot so that it can continue to grow. With water, sun, and a little luck you’ll observe more changes when flowers and seeds grow.

Learning Goals:

I found that this activity is actually beneficial for children’s learning, and development, it definitely teaches them responsibility by giving them examples like if you don’t water the plants they die, and plants need sun and air to grow. Kids also learn new skills and different names of plants, which enrich their literacy. It also gives them self confidence of what they achieved when they watch their plants growing, and flowers blooming.
