Play the Game – Own the History

Morocco achieves a number of records after qualifying for the quarter-finals of the World Cup, Qatar 2022.

Morocco, what many call the “underdog” in the 2022 World Cup, has made history. The Moroccan team became the first Arab team to reach the quarter-finals in the World Cup, and its coach Walid Al-Rakraki became the first African coach to reach this round.

Ashraf Hakimi and Hakim Ziash participated in the seventh match of the World Cup, and became the most representative Moroccan players of the team in the tournament.

The win echoed across the world. Streets and corners in my own community were filled with people celebrating the success of the Moroccan team. People of so many nationalities came together. You could hear Zagharit (an Arab sound of celebration), cheering and singing. Children and families in the middle of the street. People – African, Arab, American – carried Moroccan flags as they all expressed their happiness that the Moroccan team advanced to the next round of the World Cup competition. Among all the celebration and happy noise, this is really a moment of unspeakable joy.

Arab and African people everywhere are celebrating together and it’s a beautiful scene. One country is making history in the game of soccer. But it’s a win making many nationalities proud.

Abderrahim (Abdou), a Moroccan/US Citizen, is a work colleague. When I asked Abdou about Saturday’s Match expectation between Morocco and Portugal, he said that he will be proud of the Moroccan team even if they lose, however, he hopes that they win.

We all know that Portugal has a strong soccer team, but who knows what is going to happen? I didn’t expect Brazil to lose today.
