My Daughter’s First Eyeglasses

I knew it! I knew that one of my kids will wear prescription glasses.

At first, I thought my son needed glasses. But I was relieved by the good news I received from his doctor. My son’s eyes are 20/20.

Then, my daughter started squinting and sitting too close to the television. A few weeks later, I got a letter from her school saying that Iness had not passed her vision exam.

So, a visit to the ophthalmologist was necessary. She has a lazy eye with astigmatism (just like me.) She will have to wear glasses full time.

I looked at her and I said “I’m sorry! Your parents have awful vision!”

I started wearing glasses when I was 5 years old. My childhood turned into a nightmare! I got made fun of! I got bullied at school and in the neighborhood.

I still remember kids called me Four eyes, laughed, and run away. I went home shedding tears. I hated my glasses, and I hated myself. I thought I looked ugly.

I also remember that my mom’s finances were tight and couldn’t buy me new glasses every year. My mom was divorced and broke, she was barely able to feed me.

Somehow I did not break my glasses. Sometimes one of the temples would fall off and I would screw it back in using a tiny screwdriver or, failing that, a sharp kitchen knife. The nose pads grew a buildup of green gunk, and I cleaned them with a pencil. I also cleaned the lenses with my shirt, a towel, a tissue, and sometimes I washed them with water and wipe them with toilet paper.

Now, at 37, I wear contact lenses. Sometimes, I take them off to relax after a long day of having to see everything.

The struggle without glasses

My daughter is almost a clone of me…for better and worse. We look alike, we appreciate the same things, and we have the same attitude! Scary y’all!

My daughter has a strong personality. I know that she can hit a boy with a book if he tries to bully her.

I see my daughter, and I know that she could trade her expensive glasses for a gingerbread man.

Yesterday, she put her glasses on her stuffed unicorn, and told me that her unicorn needs glasses.

She chewed the edges of her glasses. Now they look horrible!

Those glasses are not living longer. Time to get her a second pair.
