Thanksgiving Buffet- Table Number 5

Write about a random act of kindness you’ve done for someone.

I remember when I used to work as a food and beverage manager at a high-end hotel.

It was Thanksgiving day.

We hosted a grand buffet that cost $200 per person, and more than 600 guests graced the event. Our menu boasted of a variety of dishes, including applewood bacon, sausage, shrimp cocktail, smoked salmon, omelet station, soup du jour, chicken piccata, waffles, pancakes, assorted baked goods, coffee, tea, mimosas, and more.

As guests arrived, I greeted them and directed servers to ensure everything was in order at the buffet station. Suddenly, my director approached me and whispered, “Someone just grabbed a plate and helped himself without paying for the food. He’s at table 5. Go and ask him to stop and pay at the register.”

I headed to the ballroom to locate table number 5 and spotted an elderly man, probably in his late 70s, sitting alone with a small plate of food consisting of a piece of salmon and salad. He seemed clean and not homeless. While everyone else was enjoying their meals with loved ones, he was alone, eating slowly and quietly.

At first, I was hesitant to approach him, but I noticed my boss observing me from a distance.

Therefore, I walked over to the man’s table and greeted him, “Happy Thanksgiving, sir. Would you like some water or sweet tea?” He responded, “Happy Thanksgiving. I believe I am fine, thank you.” I then said, “Enjoy your meal and have a wonderful rest of your day.”

After leaving the ballroom, my boss was waiting for me to report back. Unfortunately, I had to lie to him and say, “I spoke to the man, and he will stop by the host register to pay.”

It’s a shame that every year, the hotel wastes tons of food, and it all ends up in the trash. What’s the harm in one person out of the 600 guests enjoying a free meal?

“In helping others, we shall help ourselves, for whatever good we give out completes the circle and comes back to us.”
