To Be Free…In My Opinion

What comes to mind when you hear the word ‘freedom’?

Do you have as much freedom as you want in your life?

What makes a person free?

Here’s a short story of what made me think of freedom:

My sister went to New York and asked me to take care of her cat. Vicki is a nice-gentle cat, except I can’t take her with me home. Unfortunately, I have pet allergies and I can’t spend more than 30 min with them. So I have to check on her everyday, and luckily my sister and I are neighbors.

As soon as I opened the door, Vicki run to me, bumped her head and rubbed her cheeks against me. So cute!

I held Vicki with one hand, and with my other hand I poured her wet food in the bowl. I cleaned her litter box, then I played with her for a few minutes.

While playing with Vicki, I thought about freedom. Vicki was born in a farm. She did not choose this life. She did not choose to live in this house or any other house caged up.

She might have a normal life in someone’s eyes. She has food, a place to live, and little things to make her happy…but does she have freedom? Is she loved or respected? Does anyone know what is in her mind, and what does she want?

How about us, humans? Are we free? Are we getting all the love and respect we deserve? Or are we just breathing oxygen?

When I say freedom. It is the opportunity to do what is right.

Freedom to make a decision with responsibility.

Freedom to love and be loved without any restrictions. Not just left behind, neglected, and diminished.

Free from an unhealthy relationship.

Freedom is to be respected and to be treated like a human. Anything less is a form of slavery.

So, what is freedom in your opinion?

  1. No way to be free in this world. There are societal, religious and family restrictions. Being human is about being dependent on one another, so the real independence can’t be achieved.
But at the same time, I think we also have an option to get it. But then we think about consequences. There is a price that you have to pay to be free.
